“‘Form follows function’ is extremely important to me. Function is foremost.”
— Rob Boynton, Midland Founder
After nearly 60 successful years in the business, there isn’t a cabinet that Midland can’t craft. We’ve worked on some of the most exacting technical jobs a cabinet company can tackle. Challenges are what drive us to excel.
We work with architects, contractors, interior designers, and individual homeowners to design and manufacture fine custom cabinetry and millwork for every room in the house and every design aesthetic, contemporary to traditional.
Founded in 1965, experience sets us apart—and so does our fabrication facility located at our San Carlos, CA, headquarters. We are one of the few, if any, fine cabinetry companies in the SF Bay Area that crafts our products locally and onsite.
We don’t rely on third-party builders. We do it ourselves. For us, doing the work ourselves is an extension of a basic Midland principle that has served us well over the past five decades: dedication to quality control.
Proudly Made in San Carlos, California
Midland’s cabinetry is free from a range of noxious, toxic chemicals, including formaldehyde, banned by the State of California. We use low VOC (volatile organic compound) glues, finishes, and stains, and we offer fine wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

The best craftsmen working with the best machinery and state-of-the-art computerized equipment in a clean and open 23,000-square-foot facility laid out to organize workflow—that’s how we build at Midland.
We call on a variety of automated Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines—from saws to molders, cutters, and sanders—for solid-wood, panel, and veneer processing, allowing us to fabricate products accurately and quickly.
We have a complete inventory of highest-quality solid wood, custom wood veneers, and hardware. We have a grinding machine for making knives to craft custom moldings.
We also make our own doors, a lost in-house art that Midland is keeping alive, giving us a higher level of quality control for consistent grain matching.

Wood & Veneers
Wood never ceases to amaze us for its beauty, versatility and durability. We use only the finest hardwoods, both domestic—alder is one of our favorite stain-grade hardwoods—and exotic, among them stunning African redwood and zebrawood.
We excel at architectural veneers, handpicked for evenness of color and grain. Our expertise: matching.
- Book matching.
- Slip matching.
- Center balanced.
- Blueprinting of veneer paneling for cabinet and wall panel uniformity.
Details & Finishes
All our cabinets are dovetailed using CNC equipment.
- Cabinet boxes are assembled using thick shank screws located by CNC equipment.
- Face frames are assembled with glue and screws at all joints.
We offer custom, hand-applied finishes.
- Finishes include glazed, toned, highlighted, mottled, crackled, or linen styles.
- We use two-part catalyzed conversion varnish, which ensures long-term durability.
Hardware
Our choice of hardware speaks directly to ensuring both complementary design and the practicalities of usage, and we work with only the best American-made and French-imported hardware in rusted iron, solid brass, bright nickel ,and oil-rubbed bronze.
- We use only the best concealed draw guides with full extension under-mounts.
- We rely on leading manufacturers for our concealed European soft-closing hinges.
- We craft specialty, traditional, and contemporary pulls, including those made of wood.
Sustainability
We care as much about healthy forests as we do about excellence in workmanship, offering clients wood grown in well-managed forests, as certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. We use reclaimed wood from sources including Restoration Timber, which we then mill in our shop to match our clients’ architectural requirements. Our respect for the environment is also a personal one: Our company-wide recycling program uses a high-power vacuum system that collects and recycles all the sawdust in our shop. We long ago swapped out incandescent lighting for energy-efficient LED systems.
